The dust has only just settled from the shock release of a white adidas Copa Mundial last year, the boots first colour update in 31 years. But now the German giants are at it again - dropping five new, limited edition, Samba inspired, colourways on the world's best selling football boot.
A World Cup in Brazil is special. The combination of colourful Brazilian culture and the attractive free flowing style of football played by the six time champions, promise this summer to be like no other before. Reinterpreting one the most recognisable boots of all time is not a task that should be taken lightly but if your going to do it, this is the year.
Each of the five new colourways; Solar Zest/Black, Blue/White/Zest, Purple/White/Berry, Berry/White/Slime and Slime/Black/Zest take direct inspiration from the home nation, playing on the bright Samba style. However the classic Copa has not been forgotten and subtle touches such as black or white form stripes, soleplates and tongues remain.
Having sold over 10million pairs worldwide, the Copa Mundial is an all time classic and the best-selling football boot of all time. Released in 1982 the Copa has been worn by some of football’s greatest names including: Franz Beckenbauer, Michel Platini, Zico and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.
Designed specifically for firm ground pitches the adidas Copa Mundial has an outsole constructed of dual-density direct injected Polyurethane with moulded studs. From the classic extended leather tongue down, the boot boasts a kangaroo leather upper section made from the softest ‘K’ leather available.
The craftsmanship of the Copa Mundial is also of the highest standard and was the last revolutionary product innovation created by the founder of the adidas brand, Adi Dassler. The sporting goods legend had been involved in the early development of the original Copa Mundial before he passed away in 1982.
adidas will no doubt divide opinions with such a radical change in direction for the Mundial and there will always be the 'Copa's should only be black' camp. But in the modern game there is definitely a place for coloured Copa's in the today's market, especially in a World Cup year.
The new limited edition adidas Copa Mundial Football boot colourways are available from selected stockists including Pro-Direct Soccer. What do you think of the new updates? Let us know. Join the conversation online, on Twitter and on Facebook.
